Power-efficient optical communication

Transmission capacity in optical fiber communication systems has been continuously enlarged for around 40 years by introducing various kinds of innovative technologies. In this evolution, the required power has been also significantly increased. Considering the sustainability, we must reduce the power consumption in optical communication systems.
For this purpose, we are conducting research on advanced optical communication technologies, including modulation and demodulation, coding, multiplexing and signal processing technologies.

Exploring new areas for optical communication

To date, optical communication technologies has been mainly used in fiber optic systems using laid optical fibers. In other areas, such as space and underwater, the demands for high capacity data transmission will also increase.
Since the requirements in these new area are much different from those in the conventional fiber optic systems, we are conducting research on technologies to expand the application are of optical communication.
